For four decades, two things have deeply informed Jeannie Coyle's passion and professional practice: first, that significant investments in people are ore to business success; second, that people learn from experience on the job--with support from leaders who are in the perfect spot to support learning. With the rigor of research, Wendy and Jeannie have discovered how to bring these two ideas together in the five practices that enable managers to truly develop higher levels of capability of their staff. And, by the way increase business results. They have joined forces to launch Talent Savvy Manager, a firm dedicated to the application of these practices.
During her early career, Jeannie earned her stripes in New York City's financial industry, first at Mutual of New York, before moving onto American Express. Once at American Express, Jeannie honed her strategic HR craft through accelerated development on the job. Fast increasing responsibility at American Express during her 11 years there propelled her through the leadership pipeline and kept her continually on the learning edge. She had the opportunity to amplify her experience as an apprentice to a premier Exceptional Development Manager. He taught her well how discover the drivers for making the critical and highly focused changes in leadership, workforce, and organizational capabilities that lead to business growth.
All this learning paid off when Jeannie was promoted to Senior Vice President of HR at American Express, and partnered with her boss Lour Gerstner, to create an enduring talent management system for organically growing leaders for the longer term. Next San Francisco beckoned and her career continued at Bank of America. There she designed and implemented a global leadership development program as VP of Leadership Development and led a creative redesign of the job design and compensation system that transformed the work and rewards for the Systems and Operations Group.
Jeannie founded her first consulting company in 1986. Early on, she became a strategic partner of the Tom Peter's Group implementing an innovative program designed to create customer responsive cultures. She has collaborated with many senior management executives to align the "people side" with business strategy execution through leadership coaching, design of leadership development systems, and tuning up organizational design and culture. She works across industries with clients such as 3M, Intel, Nike, Time Warner, S. C. Johnson Wax, American Express, GE Capital, Pacific Gas & Electric, Pac Bell, The New York Times, CompuCom, Kaiser Permanente, and Wells Fargo, as well as many smaller fast growing firms.
She has been a board member of the Human Resource Planning Society for two terms and a member of the executive committee for seven years. She is currently on the board of the Pacific Northwest HR Strategic Forum. Jeannie regularly provides engaging keynote addresses on leadership, strategic HR, and coaching at client conferences. She has appeared as a presenter at the Human Resource Planning Society, ASTD, and SHRM meetings and conferences.
She received an honors BA from St. Louis University. She teaches in the MBA programs at Marylhurst University and Portland State University in Portland where she currently resides.
