Enhanced Ebook Information for Authors

IS THIS PRODUCT RIGHT FOR YOU?

• The video needs to add to your message in a way the reader will intuitively grasp.  For example, a book on voice coaching could include videos of voice exercises, and people will immediately see why they should pay extra for that.  Enhanced e-books where the video simply repeats the message in the text have done less well.
• The videos can be expensive to produce, and BK only contributes $1,000 towards their production.   This product is a good fit for you if you have pre-existing video or were planning to produce video anyway for other reasons.    If you have limited money and resources, think carefully about whether video is the right investment.

DEADLINE

• Four weeks after Author Day: A final decision on whether you are doing an enhanced e-book, and your signature on the contract.
• Two months before Pub Date:  We will need all video & audio files and other inputs mentioned below. 

INPUTS

Video and Audio Files

• All video needs to be mp4 or m4v format, all audio should be mp3 format.
• The total length should ideally be around 25 or 30 minutes, and certainly not less than 20 or greater than 50 minutes.
• All the files together should not exceed 600 MB.
• The video size should be 640 x 360 pixels.

Video Information

• Please indicate where in the book you would like each file to be embedded.
• Please say what captions you would like under each of them.
• Let us know what video credits we should put on the copyright page (aka, the name of your video production company.)

 Preface for the Enhanced Edition

• Write one page (say 250-500 words) about what your video and audio files do to improve the reading experience and enhance the learnings.

BUDGET & CONTRACT

BK will contribute $1,000 towards video production costs in return for the non-exclusive rights to use the videos in the enhanced e-book and its promotional materials.   The author will cover the rest of the cost of production, and the videos will remain the intellectual property of the author. Please click here to see a sample contract.  The royalty rate is covered by the existing publishing agreement.  

PRICING

For a book with a list price of up to $21.00 in printed format, the text-only e-book costs $9.99 on the Apple store, and the enhanced version will cost $11.99.  The Google Play and Barnes & Noble Nook Color versions usually sell for $1-2 more than the Apple version.

OUTCOMES

Because this is a new market, enhanced ebooks tend to sell fewer total copies than regular ebooks.  There are fewer distribution channels.  As the number of people reading on tablets continues to increase, we expect to see the market for these enhanced titles pick up.
