What is the Berrett-Koehler Digital Desk?

The Digital Department is a subset of our Editorial Department, and is in charge of digital content creation innovation. Right now, that means creating digital companion products for BK books. We sell some of our innovative digital content, and also create free content for marketing and email acquisition purposes. We do 10-15 major projects per year; not every book can benefit from a digital companion product.

However, every book does receive a content-rich product page here, and is featured in our newsletter and social media. We also offer advice and consulting around helping authors increase their personal online presence. When our new website is launched, the Digital Department in cooperation with the Communications Department will be doing content marketing associated with every book.

DIGITAL PRODUCT OFFERINGS

ENHANCED E-BOOKS - These books have video and audio files embedded within them to enhance the message. They are supported on the following mobile devices: Apple’s iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, Google Android tablets and smart phones, and Barnes & Noble Nook Color. They are not yet supported on the Amazon Kindle, neither on the app that plays on non-Kindle mobile devices nor the on the Kindle Fire.

SELF-ASSESSMENTS - Quizzes with 20-30 questions that measure the mastery of skills taught by the book. The customers complete this quiz on the BK website, and receive a graphic (bar chart, line graph) etc. representing their skill levels, and interpretation from the author based on their results.

DIGITAL MARKETING OFFERINGS

APPS FOR SMARTPHONE & TABLET - Companion apps for books assist the customers in acting upon the information learned in the book, and making it part of their daily practice.

ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCES - These are mini online courses we host on our BK website, which support and expand on the book’s material.

CUSTOMER CONNECTION VIDEOS- These are videos which present the “elevator speech of the book” and end by offering a free gift (like a book chapter) to viewers who submit their email address.

How do I work with BK to make my digital companion product?

On your Author Day, in discussions with the Digital Team, make a decision about what (if any) digital product, service, or offering is the best fit for you.
If you are not ready to make a decision on your Author Day, you will be contacted four weeks later to make a final decision.
If you decide to do a digital project, be sure to deliver your parts on schedule. The expectations and schedule for each type of digital product, service, or offering is outlined in this document.
Provided we receive your files on schedule, the digital product, service, or offering will be ready by the pub date of your regular book. This way, you can use it to market your book, or sell it along with your regular book.
